Job Description

Performs a full range of construction, installation, maintenance and repair duties related to building maintenance, which includes the operation of tools and heavy equipment. Other tasks include administrative activities to assist with the efficient and effective flow of work within the assigned area. Position involves high levels of interaction with coworkers, customers and vendors. Has both internal and external contacts. Internal contacts (our employees are our customers) make up about 90% of these contacts. External contacts (vendors, contractors, etc.) make up the other 10%. Contacts are approximately 50% electronic media and 50% face to face. Must be able to function in an environment of changing priorities, delays and cancelations and still meet expected timelines and schedules. This job requires manual dexterity and attention to detail. Working conditions for this position include exposure to fumes, paint, chemicals, dust, noise, tight spaces (attics, crawl spaces), elevated platforms, roofs, exposure to inclement weather, and computer monitors. Additional conditions include driving, working within and around the fire service culture and environment.

Supervision Received: 

Works under the general supervision of the Project & Facilities Manager. Performs duties independently with minimal supervision. Decisions are made using Facility Maintenance best practices, and common sense. Operates within budgetary and purchasing guidelines. Prioritizes work based on life safety, mission critical, operational concerns.

Supervisory Exercised:

Maybe required to provide guidance to station personnel or temp labor on “in house” or special projects.

Work is assigned in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines; the supervisor provides guidance on assignments, which do not have related precedents. The employee uses initiative and resourcefulness to complete work in accordance with accepted practices. The employee uses judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines, references, and procedures and adapting them according to the circumstances of the specific case or transaction. If existing guidelines cannot be applied, the employee refers to the supervisor or a higher level employee for guidance. Completed work is evaluated for appropriateness and effectiveness.

  • On-site regular attendance is required for this position.
  • Assist with coordination of landscaping with station Captain or Captain’s designee. Includes changes to irrigation timing, landscape changes, weeding, spraying, mowing, pruning, trimming, edging, seeding, bark dust placement, parking lot cleaning, and gutter cleaning. Knowledge of landscape sprinkler systems; installation, maintenance and repair.
  • May include minor appliance repair or installation including work on ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers, extractors, washers, dryers, coffee makers, gas valves, etc.
  • Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools; includes repair of mowers, saws, generators, air compressors, sprayers, miscellaneous small power tools.
  • Performs parking lot striping including handicap and hash marks, curbs.
  • Maintains records and reports of repairs and preventative maintenance using computers and computer software.
  • Small project procurement process, contracting, and contract management.
  • Provides a wide variety of construction and remodeling skills including to perform skilled tasks such as, but not limited to; carpentry, finish carpentry, plastering, remodeling, custom woodworking, sheetrock installation, mud, tape, finish work and repair; concrete work including building forms, base, pours, flatwork and finishing, includes concrete block wall construction; interior and exterior painting; flooring; roof, shingle, gutter and downspout repair, including fascia and barge boards; foundations, framing, fencing, walls, doors, handles, locks, hinges and frames; demolition, and window installation. General maintenance projects including ceiling tile, minor floor care, installing TV’s and mounts.
  • Performs maintenance assessments (check to determine if repair is required) for maintenance and minor repairs on toilets, sinks, urinals, showers, water heaters, hot water circulators and drains.
  • Purchases, delivers/moves furniture, appliances, mattresses, lawn maintenance equipment to stations and facilities.
  • Basic knowledge of (or experience working on) the maintenance of generators
  • Basic knowledge of operation and minor repair of HVAC systems/thermostats.
  • Basic knowledge of fire alarm panel operation/programming/troubleshooting
  • Operates various vehicles including forklifts, lawn mowers, tractors, scissor lifts and tele handlers.
  • Orders and purchases parts and supplies.
  • Performs or contracts for pest control, water sealing (brick locations).
  • Performs lighting maintenance – changing bulbs, ballasts, repairing/replacing broken interior/exterior fixtures.
  • Maintenance and repair of bay doors, openers and signaling systems.
  • Maintenance and repair of fuel pumps, hoses and nozzles.
  • Oversees and evaluates work done by vendors and contractors.
  • Job requires solid working knowledge of Munis Financial software.
  • Keeps station personnel up to date on current projects.

- Valid drivers license and acceptable driving record
- High School Diploma, GED, or College Degree
- 3 years of progressively responsible experience as a facility maintenance worker or similar
