Educational and Experience Requirement:Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations/Advertising, or a related field. Master’s degree in a related field preferred. Five (5) years of professional experience in writing, marketing, communications, social media, public relations, or experience in a related field. Preferred qualifications include experience in a state institution of higher education or a patient care environment, a minimum of two (2) years in a management or leadership role with supervisory experience, project oversight, and strategic planning, as well as familiarity with third-party online blog tools, online marketing tools, direct mail, email marketing, online communications, and segmentation programs. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position:Performs complex and highly advanced managerial work providing direction and guidance in communications, marketing, and public relations efforts for Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU COM) to increase the visibility and enhance the image of the college. Directs the development and implementation of a strategic marketing and communications plan. Creates and manages digital, print, social media, website, and other marketing and communication materials for the College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Physicians Clinic in collaboration with college leadership and the SHSU Division of Integrated Marketing and Communications.
Primary Responsibilities:Develops and implements comprehensive marketing and communication strategies to effectively promote Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) mission, programs, and initiatives to internal and external collaborators. Directs the marketing, public relations, and communications efforts for all COM programs and initiatives. Supervises and directs team projects involving multiple stakeholders. Manages marketing campaigns across multiple platforms. Composes articles that highlight the COM and works with a variety of media outlets to share the positive impact of the institution. Directs all aspects of media relations, including proactive pitching, responding to media inquiries, and cultivating relationships with journalists and reporters. Ensures consistent messaging internally and externally to enhance SHSU-COM’s visibility. Directs marketing and communications, and creates campaigns to increase awareness, foster community engagement, and advance the SHSU-COM’s mission and goals. Works with the SHSU Integrated Marketing and Communications (IMC), to ensure compliance and alignment with branding, standards, policies, and procedures. Writes, edits, and critically reviews content and branding for publications, advertisements, web pages, videos, and social media posts for the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). Collects information and data from stakeholders to design, develop, and distribute bi-monthly and quarterly e-newsletters to the COM community, including clinical preceptors, and affiliated sites across Texas. Focuses on public relations and marketing to increase the number of physicians serving as preceptors for student doctors, thus enhancing the profile and presence of the COM in the region. Creates advertisements, marketing materials and communications related to COM events and assists the Events Coordinator, the Professional Development and CME Coordinator, Medical Student Affairs, and Student Affairs with advertising and publicizing internal and external events. Writes and submits stories and developing ads for relevant medical associations’ publications such as the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) publications. Manages the design and development of the SHSU-COM website and completes updates and maintenance of web pages and content for the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM), the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Clinic, and affiliated residency programs. Meets with stakeholders to conduct research and complete interviews to produce content and features for external audiences on research, teaching, service, and community outreach for various media outlets. Develops and implements a strategic marketing plan for the SHSU Physicians Clinic to increase revenue and attract new patients. Creates and orders branded promotional materials and participates in conferences with marketing booths at conventions and conferences. Produces advertisements to recruit new faculty, staff, and preceptors while also coordinating photographic and video projects for the COM and SHSU Physicians Clinic. Monitors media coverage of SHSU-COM and SHSU Physicians Clinic and provides regular updates to leadership. Creates needed reports including a comprehensive annual report for the COM. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:Works closely with other university departments including academic affairs, enrollment services, student affairs, institutional advancement, alumni relations, as well as with other external agencies. Must have strong interpersonal skills, together with exceptional verbal and written communication abilities. Fosters a collaborative and creative work environment, and provides guidance, support, and mentorship as needed. This position involves some after-hours and weekend commitments. Strong communication skills, both orally and written. Proven ability to of develop and implement successful marketing and communication strategies in a complex organization. Knowledge of AP Style guidelines, digital marketing tools, analytics, and content management systems. Must possess a thorough understanding of word processing, graphic design, and desktop publishing elements. Ability to demonstrate excellent writing skills for public relations and social media programs needed for media messaging. Direct knowledge of organic copy optimization via social media and an in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) including how they can be deployed in different scenarios.
