Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Student Success Advocate will assist the Orientation and Student Success Office in coordinating a comprehensive strategy for supporting a cohort of over 200 first-gen students to graduate from Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Critical responsibilities for this position include connecting students to opportunities, leveraging technology, inspiring student motivation and purpose, and coordinating early alert interventions including a robust Summer Bridge Program for first year exploring students, English language learners and STEM majors.As a member of the OSS team, the Student Success Advocate will benefit from being part of a caring team environment made up of more than 40 people, which includes professional staff and student leaders. OSS anticipates hiring one hardworking and energetic professional to help expand our team and continue to provide high-touch support for SLCC students.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties: Coordinate Early-Alert Interventions:
  • Utilize student retention theories to guide interactions.
  • Work collaboratively with departments in the Student Success Unit, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs to case manage up to 250 students during the duration of the Summer Bridge Program.
  • Utilize MySuccess and work together with other departments to create meaningful student success interventions.
  • Meet regularly with other departments to discuss student success interventions and challenges that impact student retention and persistence.
  • Work collaboratively with others to implement a Summer Bridge Program and ongoing support services for new students starting at SLCC.
  • Develop procedures for student follow-up and engagement.
  • Work with the OSS Assistant Director to assess the effectiveness of services and create appropriate recommendations for improvement.

Inspire student motivation and purpose :
  • Provide individualized support to students who may be experiencing difficulty adjusting to the culture and norms of higher education or those facing barriers impacting their success and completion of the Summer Bridge Program.
  • Advocate for students facing barriers and connecting them to academic enhancement opportunities.
  • Assist students in accessing college resources.
  • Support various student processes, including applications, appeals, and scholarships.
  • Prepare and present student success skill workshops during the fall and spring semesters for Summer Bridge participants and other students at large.
Connect Students to Opportunity:
  • Partner with SLCC departments such as advising, financial aid, and career services.
  • Promote student success initiatives and connect students proactively.
  • Coordinate with Basic Needs Coordinator to support students accessing community resources.
  • Supervise part time staff who help connect students to clubs and campus resources.
Leverage Technology:
  • Document student interactions in MySuccess (i.e., SLCC’s case management software).
  • Track raised flags, referrals and success plans using MySuccess and work with other departments to ensure students are being seen properly.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, social work, communications, ethnic studies, STEM, or related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of full-time direct professional experience.

Trade off 2:1 in education/experience requirement.
Candidates can trade off additional years beyond the required education for work experiencePart time experience may be considered on a prorated basis (i.e., four years of related part-time work equals two years of full-time experience).

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in a related field.Experience in higher education, particularly at two-year institutions.Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Manage up to 250 students through the Summer Bridge Program by monitoring progress closely and intervene promptly to prevent disengagement and dropout.Support in planning and implementing a Summer Bridge Program and student success coaching.Act as the main point of contact, holding meetings and 1:1 mentorship with students from the Summer Bridge Program.Train, coach, and supervise part-time staff and lead a group of professionals towards a common vision.Organize, process, and disseminate information relevant to students accurately and efficiently.Motivate, encourage, mentor, and teach students how to navigate higher education.Create and advocate for a welcoming environment for students.Utilize technology effectively and apply student development and theories.Be dependable, have excellent organizational skills, and pay close attention to details.Engage, promote and participate in campus community events building an enriched community and encourages student involvement.Identify and address potential risks to students academic and personal success, providing timely referrals for students in need.Work well under pressure and function independently with integrity under general supervision.Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of individuals.Maintain accurate student files and document interactions in the SLCC case management database.Utilize basic computer operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office) and SLCC’s student information system.Handle confidential information ethically and with discretion.Maintain a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.Demonstrate initiative, creativity, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.Collaborate with various stakeholders internal and external to SLCC to plan programming for students.Learn the requirements of SLCC services, major prerequisites, programs and degree options, as well as college resources and processes (e.g., admissions, registration, financial aid, placement, academic advising and orientation).Drive projects from inception to completions.Evaluate student success interventions and create reports and establish recommendations.Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
