Greenwich Public Schools is seeking a chemistry teacher for Greenwich High School effective August 26, 2024. Position Purpose : To provide an instructional program that will engage students in the three dimensions of the Next-Generation Science Standards. An essential component of the program is to cultivate students' scientific habits of mind, develop their capability to use scientific inquiry, and teach them how to reason in a scientific context. Specifically, the teacher will be responsible for teaching students the 8 essential practices for learning science:
1. Asking questions and defining problems
2. Developing and using models
3. Planning and carrying out investigations
4. Analyzing and interpreting data
5. Using mathematics and computational thinking
6. Constructing explanations and designing solutions
7. Engaging in argument from evidence
8. Obtaining, evaluating and communicating information
Essential Responsibilities : - Implement GPS science curriculum consistent with school district goals, mission and vision, and the Next-Generation Science Standards
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning
- Promote a classroom environment that allows students the opportunity to explore and investigate real-world science issues and problems
- Incorporate inquiry-based learning opportunities into instruction
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed
- Provide appropriate, meaningful, and timely feedback to improve student achievement
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws
- Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents
- Ensure that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
- Coordinate with other school professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participate in faculty meetings and committees
- Maintain familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other administrators as designated by the Superintendent
- Incorporate technology and digital tools appropriately into instruction
- Review and implement modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students, both general and special education
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : - Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles
- Knowledge of GPS science curriculum and the Next-Generation Science Standards
- Ability to engage students in the scientific practices of real scientists: observing, predicting, classifying, designing, hypothesizing, investigating, and drawing conclusions
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans
- Ability to utilize a learning management system to interact with and engage students
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work and instructional teams
- Ability to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, while affording opportunity for creative activity
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching techniques through the use of appropriate instructional materials to meet the needs of all learners
- Ability to provide students the opportunity to be critical thinkers of online content
Equipment : - Use of district-issued digital tools.
Qualifications Profile - CT State Certification, or certifiability, as a Chemistry, Grades 7-12, teacher (#031) required
- Dual certification in another secondarty science, and/or in secondary mathematics, preferred
