Job Description
Citizenship/Clearance requirement: Candidate must be a U.S. citizen, ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance and pass a background check and drug screening.
The Analytical Chemist will provide technical support in delivering services and development efforts in accordance with the mission of DEVCOM CBC in general and the Chemical Analysis and Physical Properties Branch. The Analytical Chemist will work with toxic industrial chemicals (TICs), toxic industrial materials (TIMs) chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and other threat agents via a range of spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy). Additional separations techniques may also be employed (GC-MS and LC-MS). Will conduct analyses for characterizing synthesis routes and determining physical and physicochemical properties to support basic and applied research and development R&D efforts. The Analytical Chemist will be required to qualify for/enroll in the U.S. Army chemical Personnel Reliability Program (PRP) and will be required to perform duties involving chemical surety material (CSM) and other designated chemical agents.
Duties and Responsibilities - Executes analytical methods and studies using a variety of technologies.
- Analyzes energetics and other materials for stability, chemical and physical characteristics.
- Develops new analytical methods or leverages existing analytical methods to conduct studies.
- Assists in writing specifications and SOPs pertaining to military requirements.
- Prepares active and passive vapor samplers to include conditioning, packing, and operation.
- Conducts targeted and non-targeted data analysis for projects using various analytical equipment for detection and quantification of single compound chemicals to differential analysis of chemical groups.
- Communicates with Government principal investigator (PI) on project requirements and executes project assignments with minimal oversight.
- Prepares documentation and test reports.
Job Requirements
- Candidate must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
- Bachelor's (required) or Master's Degree in Analytical Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry is preferred.
- Minimum of one years' experience in operating analytical laboratory equipment. A minimum of two years' experience is preferred.
- Experience in Profile Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)-MOUSE (MObile Universal Surface Explorer) Spectrometer, including 1D relaxometry, depth profiling, and diffusion measurements.
- Experience in chromatographic method development and validation.
- Experience with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) thermal desorption systems.
- Excellent analytical and interpersonal relationship skills.
- Demonstrated willingness to work with toxic chemical compounds.
- Possesses domain knowledge and understanding of analytical concepts, principles and theories related to organic and inorganic chemical analyses and experiments and ability to solve complex analytical problems presented during analyses of difficult media and target chemicals/compounds.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of using other analytical instruments such as NMR, IR and/or Raman spectroscopy for chemical identification and characterization.
- Able to effectively support methods development and method validation for novel analytical methods and techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstration of strong team player attributes.
- Microsoft Office experience required.
