Job Description Summary The Environmental Health & Safety Intern has the opportunity to work with and be mentored by Environmental Health & Safety Specialists in conducting inspections and measuring hazards to help prevent harm to workers, property, the environment, and the general public.
Day-to-day Responsibilities - Helps develop, implement, and monitor company environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) intern assists with collecting, preparing for pick up, and monitoring hazardous waste at all sites
- Participates in all aspects of the EHS inspection, investigation, and audit program (Hazardous waste inspections, building safety inspections, incident investigations, ISO 14001 auditing, etc.)
- Follow procedures to monitor health and safety at designated locations, such as ergonomics and proper PPE use
- Assists in educating, monitoring, and training personnel in safe work procedures
- Demonstrates the correct use of personal and general safety equipment. Observers to make sure that workers are using required protective gear, such as masks, safety glasses and safety toes shoes
- Works on assignments that are routine in nature, requiring limited judgment
- Receives detailed instructions on all work under close supervision
Basic Qualifications (Preferred Skills & Experience) - Currently enrolled and working on a 4-year degree in a related field (environmental protection, health, industrial hygiene, safety, physical science, engineering, chemistry, biology, etc.)
- 0 - 1 year of experience in a related field with experience working with hazardous materials and hazardous waste
- 3.0 GPA or higher preferred
Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies - Current certification in DOT, CalOSHA 30-hour, Hazard Waste Management preferred
- Demonstrates competency in researching and applying EHS compliance regulations to site operations
- Maintain a level of competence in EHS regulatory compliance
- Has effective problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills
Physical Demands - Ability to work in an office and manufacturing environment (Constant)
- Able to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, twist, bend (Occasional)
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (Occasional)
- Ability to transition between sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time (Frequent)
